Dear ensemble Monterey Friends - It is an axiom of musical aesthetics that great music is timeless. It's inner meanings apply to all peoples of all times. It is in this spirit that I usually avoid topical music because its'value can fade with the time it is attached to. Not so today. As musicians, our reaction to recent events was stated eloquently by the great Leonard Bernstein. He said:

We musicians, like everyone else, are numb with sorrow at this murder, and with rage at the senselessness of the crime. But this sorrow and rage will not inflame us to seek retribution; rather they will inflame our art. Our music will never again be quite the same. This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.

And so we shall.

Today's download is from Felix Mendelssohn's great oratorio, Elijah. It is a tribute to those who bring peace. The text begins:

Blessed are they who fear Him, they ever walk in the way of peace.
