Dear Ensemble Monterey Friends - Do you remember what you were doing at age 18? Mozart was busy composing the opera La finta giardiniera (The Pretend Garden Girl), and today's download is the overture. The plot includes plenty of opera fare like stabbings, ill fated loves, secret engagements, etc. By 18 Mozart was already 13 years into his compositional career. (Old music joke: by age 5 Mozart already composed with the skill of a composer twice his age). This vivacious little gem is in the "rococo" style of the middle 18th Century, but it's inventiveness heralds what Mozart was to become. Shortly before this he had hung out at the Mannheim court, where the composer Stamitz had perfected the crescendo. You will hear it as a prominent feature of this overture. Mozart stayed at Mannheim a little longer than necessary because he had a crush on his future wife's older sister. Don't worry -she wasn't the least bit interested it came to naught. If you need something peppy to get you into the week, this is it! Enjoy!

Embarrassing Correction: Friday I wrote that the Randall Thompson Suite, that day's download, would be on our October 25th free streamed concert. I lied (second music joke: I'm a conductor so when I lie it's professional). Instead it is on our second concert, "Three is a Crowd," on January 30th and 31st, 2021.
