Dear Ensemble Monterey Friends - Today's download comes from our season finale concert in 2008. It is a contemporary musical setting of Edgar Allen Poe's poem titled Israfel. the composer, Tarik O'Reagan, is a contemporary British artist who is currently in the forefront of choral and instrumental composition. This ethereal poem, inspired by the Holy Quran, begins:

In Heaven a spirit doth dwell
“Whose heart-strings are a lute”;
None sing so wildly well
As the angel Israfel,
And the giddy stars (so legends tell),
Ceasing their hymns, attend the spell
Of his voice, all mute.

This performance is with the Ensemble Monterey String Section and the elite vocal ensemble, Cantiamo, here conducted by Cheryl Anderson. Listen for the very complex vocal canon at the distance of one beat, later on in the piece. Enjoy!
